The IELTS Tests

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS Tests) is the English language proficiency test for study, migration, or work in the U.K., Australia, Canada, New Zealand, U.S.A, and other parts of the world.

The IELTS test uses a nine-band scale to identify levels of proficiency, from non-user (band score 1) through to expert (band score 9).

The total test time is 2 hours and 45 minutes.

British Council in Nepal is responsible for carrying out Tests in Nepal.

There are two types of IELTS Tests:

  1. IELTS Academic: For people applying for higher education or professional registration in countries mentioned above. 
  2. IELTS General Training: For those who are going to countries mentioned above for secondary education, work experience, or training programs.

Note:

  • Listening and Speaking are the same for both tests, but the subject matter of the Reading and Writing sections differs depending on which test you take.
  • The Listening, Reading, and Writing sections of all IELTS are completed on the same day, with no breaks in between them.
  • The Speaking section, however, can be completed up to a week before or after the other tests. Your test center will advise.

Test format of IELTS Test:

1.Listening
  • Four recordings of native English Speakers will be played and you should write answers to a series of questions.
  • 40 questions will be asked and approx… 30 minutes (plus 10 minutes transfer time) 
 2. Reading
A. Academic Reading (for IELTS Academic )
  • Three reading passages.
  • 40 questions will be asked and 60 minutes. 
B. General Training Reading (for IELTS General Training )
  • Three passages.
  • 40 questions will be asked and 60 minutes.
3. Writing
A. Academic Writing (for IELTS Academic )
  • Two writing tasks.
  • 2 questions will be asked and 60 minutes.
B. General Training Writing(for IELTS General Training )
  • Two writing tasks.
  • 2 questions will be asked and 60 minutes. 
4. Speaking
  • It has three parts which consist of an oral interview between the test takers’ and an examiner. Speaking tests are recorded.
  • Time is 11-14 minutes.

IELTS Tests

British Council in Nepal

  • It sets IELTS dates, fees, and locations in Nepal. ( * IELTS is available on 48 fixed dates a year up to four times a month, depending on local demand.)
  • It offers the IELTS test center in Kathmandu, Butwal, Biratnagar, Pokhara, and Chitwan.
  • The fee for an IELTS Academic or General training test for both paper-based and computer-delivered IELTS is NPR.21,500
  • You will receive an SMS two days before the test date confirming the venue for your test and the timetable.
  • Required documents while registering for Test: A clear photocopy of your MRP Passport, mobile number, and email address.

For Payment of the Test:

  • Nabil Bank’s branches (Butwal, Chitwan, Biratnagar, Bhairawa, Nepalgunj, Birtamode, Pokhara & Kathmandu) OR
  • The institutions registered with the British Council for IELTS registration such as members of ECAN, IERIN, FECON, EEC-Nepal, Dolphin Education Consultancy, Pradhan International, Vivid Care Services, RTC English and English for All.

How to prepare for IELTS Test:

  1. Read IELTS Official Books.
  2. Visit the IELTS Official channel on YouTube.
  3. Visit https://www.britishcouncil.org.np/exam/ielts/prepare
  4. For vocabulary building: The Economist Flashcards, Vocabulary.com, Quizlet.com, Merriam Webster Dictionary
  5. For Reading Comprehension: 
  • Articles from the New York Times, the New Yorker, the Economist, Scientific American.
  • English Novels

  6. For speaking:

  • Follow YouTube videos and apps like English Talk, FluentU,  SpeakingPal, Speaker, VOA Learning English, and default speaker of iOS and Android. 

  7. For Writing:

  • Make habit of writing articles, essays, poems, opinions.

   8. Give as many Mock Tests as you can.
